DFE Abstract

Limo spent nine weeks in the summer of 2015 as an intern at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi in Nairobi, Kenya. As a Chemistry major, Limo gained experience researching literature on Albizia schimperiana, extracting plant material, filtering the material and subjecting it to gravitational column chromatography, purifying the isolated compounds, and characterizing the isolated compounds using a combination of spectroscopic techniques. Under the supervision of Dr. Leonidah Kerubo, the Senior Lecturer, Limo gained hands on research experience that allowed him to undertake laboratory projects without knowing the outcome. Limo’s primary supervisor was Dr. Anes Kovacevic and Dr. Peter Hackbert was his secondary supervisor. During Limo’s presentation, he will share his learning and growth experience related to the EPG abilities that he acquired at the University of Nairobi.
