DFE Abstract

Using the skills developed during the first summer of the EPG Summer Institute, Cheyanna Johnson, a junior Business Administration major and resident of McArthur, Ohio, worked with Manna Meal, Inc., Trinity’s Table and the Covenant House Food Pantry providing a different type of food insecurity relief to the population of Charleston, West Virginia. Studying each organization to understand the managerial challenges of coordinating a non-profit organization, Cheyanna worked as a hands-on volunteer to learn the foundations of the organizations, the responsibilities behind managing volunteers, observing how donations are acquired and applying those observations in actual situations, and coordinating functions to develop the agency and improve service quality. Her internship site supervisor was Sara Busse. Cheyanna’s internship was sponsored primarily by Professor Ed McCormack and secondly by Dr. Katrina Rivers-Thompson – a Shepherd Program sponsor – and tertiary by Dr. Peter Hackbert.
