DFE Abstract
Anna (Anya) Heremes spent 9 weeks of summer 2018 as an intern at Americana World Community Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Americana is bridging the gap from surviving to thriving for Louisville’s refugee, immigrant and underserved populations through education, family support, youth achievement, and career and financial development. As the Summer Youth Program intern, Anna worked with the Youth Program Coordinator to create fun, and engaging activities that served in preventing summer learning loss in the refugee and immigrant youth. More specifically, Anna had a chance to assist Jefferson County Public School teachers in the morning ESL sessions and was in charge of the writing station for the incoming fifth graders. In the afternoons, Anna implemented and taught the curriculum in the six core areas: STEM, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Environmental Education, Literacy, and Computer Literacy. Anna also chaperoned for the field trips, as well as assisted in teaching children swim and implementing recreational activities. Under the supervision of Lauren GottWorth, Anna learned about the dynamics of working at the non-profit environment as well as how to relate to children who experienced trauma and cultural adjustment. Anna’s primary advisor was Dr. Wang and secondary advisor was Dr. Hackbert.
